A powerful earthquake hit the world's oldest lake in south Siberia on Tuesday.

A powerful earthquake hit the world's oldest lake in south Siberia, Russia's Emergencies Ministry said on Tuesday.

"The quake with the epicenter in Lake Baikal measured about 6.7 on the Richter scale," the ministry said in a statement.

"No tremors were felt in nearby settlements. Quick inspections did not reveal any damage to infrastructure or power supply lines in the area," the ministry said.

Baikal, a UNESCO World Heritage site, holds around 20% of the planet's freshwater.

The lake has been the focus of major environmental scares in recent years, with a last-minute change to an oil pipeline route that was set to pass near Baikal's shores, and environmental regulators' claims against a pulp mill accused of pumping large volumes of toxic waste into the lake.
