Ukrainian student organizations will protest the introduction of charges for some educational services, a student group leader said on Friday.

On August 27 the Ukrainian government adopted a resolution introducing charges for a number of services at state-run educational establishments. For example, students will now have to pay for missed lab classes, extracurricular classes, the use of the Internet, libraries and other services.

"We are ready to take to the streets," Myhailo Kamenev, of the Foundation of Regional Initiatives, said.

He spoke at a round table entitled "The Educational Reform by the Cabinet of Ministers: Legalization of Corruption or Social Necessity?" that took place at RIA Novosti's Ukrainian bureau.

The Ukrainian Students' Association said the fundamental principle of any reform should be "free education."

Other speakers said the government had not consulted student groups and ignored their opinions.

Ukrainian student organizations demanded that the government resolution be suspended and submitted to public discussion.
