Turkmenistan will push forward the creation of a new UN body to monitore energy supplies.

Turkmenistan will push forward the creation of a new UN body to monitore energy supplies, the country's president, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, said during a meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The Turkmen delegation is planning to propose a draft resolution on the establishment of a working group to develop an international mechanism for stable energy supplies, the president said. The proposal stipulates that a UN Energy Council should be subsequently created to monitor energy supplies on a permanent basis.

The document will be introduced to the world leaders during the 65th session of the UN General Assembly, the Turkmen leader said.

Natural gas, crude oil and oil products make up about 80% of the Turkmenistan's exports.

Supplying gas to Europe has become increasingly relevant for the country. In June, Turkmenistan launched the construction of a $2 billion pipeline to deliver natural gas from its largest gas field, South Yolotan, to the coast of the Caspian Sea. The planned Nabucco gas pipeline will later connect the Caspian to Europe via Turkey.

Participants in the New York summit have paid much attention to the energy security issue, although it is not among the UN Millennium Development Goals, the focus of discussions at the summit.

However, some world leaders, including Robert Zoellick, president of the World Bank, have stressed that it would be impossible to reach those goals without assuring universal access to energy sources.
