The Russian sailing ship Nadezhda (Hope) is leaving the Russian Far Eastern city of Vladivostok for Shanghai to take part in Expo 2010, said a spokesman for the Maritime State University, which owns the ship.

The 2010 World Expo is being held in Shanghai from May 1 to October 31, 2010. Over 200 states, corporations and international organization are taking part. Over 48 million people have visited the event since its opening and over 5 million have entered the Russian pavilion.

"The primary objective of the voyage is to take part in the Expo 2010 exhibition where the frigate will become part of the Russian pavilion," the spokesman said.

"It will represent Russia as one of the world's leading maritime powers," he said, adding that the Nadezhda, a many-time winner of international sailoffs, is expected to arrive in Shanghai on September 24.

Russia has constructed a pavilion at the exhibition for the first time in 30 years. The sun-shaped building comprises 12 white-and-gold towers symbolizing the 12 months of the year, and occupies an area of 6,000 square meters.
