The presidents of Russia and Ukraine each got behind the wheel of a vintage car on Friday to lead the international Emperor Nicholas II motor rally across the Russian-Ukrainian border.

Dmitry Medvedev, a vintage car enthusiast, drove in his white 1948 Pobeda sedan, while Viktor Yanukovych took the wheel of a 1950 Pobeda convertible.

Medvedev previously took his Ukrainian counterpart for a spin in his Pobeda when Yanukovych made a private visit to Russia in April.

The two presidents were at the head of a 36-car convoy for a 60 km jaunt over a Russian-Ukrainian border to mark the 100th anniversary of the first Russian motor rally from the then-capital St. Petersburg to Kiev.

Sixteen of the cars on the road on Friday were vintage models, being manufactured between 1936 and 1965, while the remaining 20 were modern vehicles.

The rally, organized by Russian energy giant Gazprom, started on Monday and will end on Saturday, when the cars arrive in the Ukrainian capital.

The event was first staged in 1910 when Emperor Nicholas II sent 48 automobiles including Russ-Balts, Mercedes and Opels for a 13-day La Coup du Tzar or Kaiser-Nikolaus-Fahrt.
