The United States has called on the UN Security Council to take new measures against Iran following recent violations of the UN's sanctions, the U.S. ambassador to the UN said Wednesday.

Susan Rice said at a Security Council meeting that the council and its sanctions committee should give an appropriate response to Iran's latest actions, but did not specify whether Washington was calling for new sanctions or not.

Earlier the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, reported that Iran was increasing its volumes of enriched uranium in violation of UN Security Council resolutions, and that the Iranian authorities had hindered inspections of the Islamic Republic's nuclear facilities.

Western powers suspect Iran of seeking to build nuclear weapons under the guise of its nuclear program, which Tehran says is aimed at the peaceful generation of civilian energy.

Iran currently has some 2.8 metric tons of low enriched uranium and 22 kilograms of 20 percent enriched uranium, according to the latest IAEA report on Iran's nuclear activities. Experts say that these 22 kilograms are already enough to produce a nuclear bomb.
