The farm employees say the elks are taken away from their mothers just four months after birth and are put in a separate enclosure. In this special kindergarten people become their adoptive parents.
However, it is not easy to produce the moose milk. Yekaterina Ugodskaya, who has been working at the farm for three years, said to get the milk from the animal it must be deceived – a milkmaid plays the role of a newborn moose to do her job.
Each female moose gives two and a half liters of milk per day. Almost all the milk produced goes to the Ivan Susanin health resort, which specializes in curing peptic ulcers.
It is strictly forbidden to drink the moose milk by glasses. The workers of the medical institution say it is not food but a medical product. The milk has a bitterish taste and no smell. A patient should drink some 10 liters of milk during his course of treatment, which lasts at least a month.
However, every day hundreds of tourists come to Kostroma to feed and pet the moose, and to taste their milk.
