The CEO and major shareholder of a Russian bank was shot dead on Wednesday evening in southwestern Moscow, a spokesman for Russia's investigation committee said.

Mikael Daudov, 66, was shot in the head with a small-caliber gun while leaving his office on Leninsky Prospekt. Daudov owned an 18.34 percent stake in the small Moscow-based bank, Lesprombank.

"The crime scene is being examined, all the necessary procedures will be carried out," Vladimir Markin said.

He added that two spent cartridge cases, of .22 (5.56mm) caliber, were found at the scene.

Police also studied footage from nearby CCTV cameras to identify the attacker.

Meanwhile, a popular tabloid, Komsomolskaya Pravda, reported that the attacker shot the man in the eye during a quarrel.

"Eyewitnesses say the businessman quarreled with someone... His opponent took a gun out of his pocket and shot Daudov in the face. The bullet hit him in the eye and injured his brain. The businessman died immediately," the newspaper wrote on its website.
