Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Monday Russian laws regulating foreigners' access to strategic assets are as liberal as in the West.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Monday Russian laws regulating foreigners' access to strategic assets are as liberal as in the West.

"I do not think Russian legislation is more conservative from the viewpoint of foreign investors' access to strategic facilities than the legislation of any other European country or the United States," Putin said at a meeting with participants of the Valdai International Discussion Club in south Russia's Sochi.

The 7th Valdai Club Meeting runs from August 31 to September 7. The discussion brings together prominent experts on Russia from 15 European countries, the United States and Asia.

"I believe [the laws are] even more liberal here than in certain other countries - we will follow this path and will not create any obstacles for investors," the Russian premier said.

Putin said the oil and gas sector in Russia is "a hen than lays golden eggs."

"And we allow anyone here - all global companies work here. I am not sure other states allow foreign investors to invest so liberally into such vitally important spheres," he said.

"We do so and we will continue to do so," Putin stressed.

RIA Novosti, in conjunction with the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, the journals Russia Profile and Russia in Global Affairs, and The Moscow News paper, has hosted the Valdai International Discussion Club meeting every year since 2004.

The annual Valdai Club aims to create an international expert forum where key international Russia specialists can receive reliable information about the growth and development of Russia and its society.
