More than 10,000 fled the Indonesian island of Sumatra along of Mount Sinabung volcano erupted for the first time for 400 years on Sunday.

The volcano has been rumbling for several days and in the early hours of Sunday it threw up lava and shot ash some 1,500 meters into the air.

Indonesian authorities issued highest level of alert shortly before the eruption. More than 9,300 people left their homes.

There is no information about killed or injured by the eruption, however local residents are currently suffering from inhaling dust.

The eruption took scientists and government by surprise, because Sinabung has last erupted four centuries ago. That's why the volcano's seismic activity has not been monitored strictly.

Supplies of medicines, tents and food for local residents are currently being arranged. Aviation in the area is unaffected.

Indonesia is located in the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where continental plates meet and cause high volcanic and seismic activity. It has more active volcanoes than any other country in the world.
