Spartak Moscow face Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea while Rubin Kazan take on Barcelona after the draw for the group stages of the 2010/11 Champions League was made on Thursday.
Spartak’s group also contains Marseille and Slovakian side Zilina.
Rubin, who beat Barcelona in Spain at this stage of last year’s competition, will also play Panathinaikos and FC Copenhagen.
Zenit St. Petersburg failed to make the group stages after they were beaten 2-0 (2-1 on agg.) in France by Auxerre on Wednesday. The Russian Premier League leaders now drop down into the Europa League.
In other Russian football news, Lokomotiv Moscow crashed out of the Europa League group stages on Thursday evening to Switzerland’s Lausanne Sports. Both legs finished 1-1, and Lokomotiv lost out in a penalty shoot-out.
Siberia’s Sibir failed to pull off a shock, losing 5-0 in Holland to PSV Eindhoven after a surprise 1-0 win in the home leg.
CSKA Moscow join Zenit in the draw for the Europa League group stages on Friday after a 2-1 (6-1 on agg.) victory over Cypriot side Famagusta FC on August 24.
