Israeli President Shimon Peres reiterated his country's concerns about Tehran's nuclear ambitions at a meeting with the International Atomic Energy Agency chief Yukiya Amano.

"Iran jeopardizes Israel and the rest of the world, as it threatens to use nuclear weapons," Haaretz quoted Peres as saying. "It is impossible to separate Iran's nuclear plans from the nature of its regime."

Western powers suspect Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons under the guise of its civilian nuclear program, a charge Tehran strongly denies, saying the program is aimed at the peaceful generation of energy.

"[Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad has called for the destruction of Israel and has denied the holocaust," the Israeli president went on. "The international community and the IAEA must take these unprecedented statements as seriously as possible."

This is Amano's first visit to Israel and second meeting with Peres since taking office on December 1, 2009.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled a planned meeting with the IAEA Director General to take time out before next week's peace talks with Palestinians in Washington.
