The Sayano-Shushensky State Biosphere Nature Reserve is in the Shusha and Yermak districts of Krasnoyarsk Territory, in the heart of the West Sayan and Altai-Sayan Mountains. The unique complex was established on March 17, 1976, to preserve the sable population and monitor the impact of the Sayano-Shushensky reservoir on natural ecosystems.
Scenic spots such as mountain streams and lakes, alpine meadows and pinewoods are preserved intact in the nature reserve. Its flora includes several thousand species, several dozen of them endangered.
“This is one of the few spots where you can get right up close to these wild animals with your camera. These wild ibex, for example can get as close as ten to fifteen paces away from humans,” Alexander Rassolov, director of the Sayano-Shushensky reserve, told RIA Novosti.
The reserve is home to about fifty species of mammal. Guides say it takes at least a week to fully appreciate the beauty of Siberia’s landscapes and wildlife.
