Two people have been questioned in connection with a security threat against an American Airlines flight in San Francisco, California, CNN has said, quoting a law enforcement source.

The threat was called into San Francisco police on Thursday before the plane took off, the TV channel said on its website. Flight 24, bound to New York, was reportedly taken to a remote location where passengers were interviewed and re-screened.

A security official was quoted by CNN as saying that the threat claimed the flight would be hijacked. However, investigators have as yet found nothing to back up the claim, the TV channel said.

According to KRON 4 News, there were 163 passengers and 11 crew members on board the flight.

A FBI spokesperson told KRON 4 News that no one was arrested following the incident.

"It will take some time to determine if this was an actual threat or if this was simply a hoax," he said.
