The death toll from landslides in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 96 people while over 100 are injured, news agency Xinhua reported on Sunday.

Earlier reports said that 80 people died in the landslides.

Torrential rains hit the Gannan Tibetan autonomous region on Saturday morning causing landslides that devastated a local center and a local hydropower plant, the agency said.

As of noon, more than 680 residents had been rescued while some 2,000 people are still missing, the agency said.

The village of Yueyuan in Chengguan township has been buried by the landslides. More than 120 homes in Chengguan township and the village of Jiangpan have been toppled, and some 300 residents in the two regions were still trapped, the agency said, referring to local authorities.

A local TV channel earlier reported that at least 50,000 people had been affected by the landslides.

China's emergencies ministry said that over 1,000 people have been killed in the country since the start of the year. Weather specialists say current floods may be the strongest in China in the past 12 years.
