Pirates have left the Syria Star ship with a cargo of sugar, hijacked earlier this week, the EU's naval force operating off Somalia said on its website.

The vessel with a crew of 22 Syrians and two Egyptians was attacked and seized late on Thursday, and two crew members were injured during the attack. The crew requested medical assistance on Friday.

Some time later the attackers left the ship of their own accord, using one on the rescue boats.

EU Navfor warship FGS Schleswig-Holstein, which was in the vicinity of the Syrian Star sent a helicopter with a medical team onboard in order to assist the vessel.

"It is always good to hear a hijacked ship is free and now EU Navfor will give the injured crew members the medical assistance they require," the website quoted the naval force commander, Rear Adm. Jan Thornqvist, as saying.
