Russia's Baltic Sea exclave of Kaliningrad has put aside 4.5 million rubles ($150,921) to provide refuge to children affected by the wildfires in Central Russia, the press centre of the regional government said on Thursday.

Russia's Baltic Sea exclave of Kaliningrad has put aside 4.5 million rubles ($150,921) to provide refuge to children affected by the wildfires in Central Russia, the press centre of the regional government said on Thursday.

"The regional budget money will be spent on habilitating the young victims in camps and sanatoriums on the Baltic coast," the statement said. "We have already received confirmation from the Moscow Region: 150 children will come to us in August from the worst-hit regions."

A scorching heat wave has gripped much of European Russia since mid-June, sparking wildfires across Central Russia and causing the worst drought in decades.

The Russian government says that 48 people have died in the fires, more than 1,900 houses have been destroyed and over 3,000 people have been made homeless.

It was earlier reported that the Kaliningrad region would shelter around 500 children.

The children will be able to spend the whole of August in Kaliningrad. Those whose homes have burnt down in the fires will be allowed to stay longer.

The regional government said a fund was being set up to collect donations for the victims.
