Mexico's Foreign Ministry announced the restoration of diplomatic relations with Honduras and the return of its ambassador to the Central American country.

Mexico's Foreign Ministry announced the restoration of diplomatic relations with Honduras and the return of its ambassador to the Central American country.

The Mexican ambassador was recalled a year ago after a military coup in Honduras.

Former Honduran leader Manuel Zelaya was ousted from the post of the country's president in June last year and expelled over efforts to seek an unconstitutional second presidential term.

Porfirio Lobo of the Honduran opposition National Party won presidential elections in Honduras in November 2009.

"The decision to fully restore diplomatic relations with Honduras was made on the basis of a report of the High-Level Commission of the Organization of the American States, which concluded that the current government of Porfirio Lobo has made considerable progress in the cause of restoring democracy and freedoms in the Central American country," the Mexican ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said the ambassador will return to Honduran capital Tegucigalpa next week.
