International financial institutions will allocate $1.1 billion towards the recovery of Kyrgyzstan's economy, the government press service said on Tuesday.
"An international donors' conference today has decided to provide $1.1 billion over the next 30 months. Of that amount, $60 million will be provided in emergency aid before the end of the year," a government spokeswoman said.
Violent clashes broke out in the south of Kyrgyzstan in mid-June between minority Uzbeks and ethnic Kyrgyz. The official death toll is around 300 but according to unofficial data, as many as 2,000 people could have been killed. Over 100,000 refugees fled to neighboring Uzbekistan and hundreds of houses and public buildings were destroyed.
Kyrgyz Finance Minister Chorobek Imashev told the conference in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek that the republic's budget deficit this year was expected to reach $619 million.
He also said Kyrgyzstan is to pay $145 million to service its foreign debt, adding that without international financial assistance, the republic's development was impossible.
Acting President Roza Otunbayeva said it would cost more than $350 million to rebuild settlements in the Osh and Jalalabad regions and another $100 million to revive the local economy.
