Russia and Armenia signed in Yerevan on Saturday an agreement on cooperation between their national Olympic committees.

Russia and Armenia signed in Yerevan on Saturday an agreement on cooperation between their national Olympic committees.

"In the Soviet era, Armenia was a republic with huge sporting traditions," President of the Russian Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov said at a press conference after signing the agreement.

"All sportsmen used the base in the Armenian town of Tsaghkadzor for high-altitude training. This contributed to the success of the USSR in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico," he added.

Zhukov said that such training is still in demand today, and should not be restricted.

"We must make the most of the opportunities that Armenia can provide. For our part, we are ready to invite the Armenian athletes to Russia for joint training," he said.

Zhukov also said the sides had discussed a project to build a sports base near Lake Sevan in Armenia.

"It [lake] is 1.9 km (1.1 mile) high so could be a good addition to Tsaghkadzor," he said.
