Russia’s Rosneft oil company will not abandon plans to carry out exploratory work at Sakhalin Island in spite of appeals from environmental organizations, the World Wildlife Fund website said on Thursday.

The work is planned for this summer and ecologists are concerned that it could harm the grey whales that come to feed on Sakhalin’s shores.

Ecologists and scientists warn that the noise produced by the seismic explorations could prevent the whales from being able to feed normally.

The mammals feed only in the warmer months and live off their fat for the rest of the year.

However, Rosneft head Sergei Bogdanchikov said the company would be unable to postpone the work until a later date.
