Violation of safety regulations at a military training ground in central Russia's Saratov region caused a blast which killed an officer, the assistant prosecutor of the Volga-Urals Military District said on Tuesday.
Sergei Bogomolov said one serviceman was also injured in the July 5 incident. He said the victims were disposing of out-of-date explosive material at the time of the blast.
Such incidents are common in Russia. On Saturday, six servicemen were killed by a blast which occurred during the disposal of explosives at a military firing range in south Siberia's Altai Territory.
One person was killed in a blast at a military training facility in central Russia's Ryazan in June. A total of 10 servicemen died in two separate incidents in November 2009 at an arms depot in the city of Ulyanovsk, in Russia's Volga region.
