Russian President Dmitry Medvedev congratulated his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama and all U.S. residents on Independence Day on Sunday, saying any attempts to hamper Russian - U.S. cooperation are "groundless and dead-ended".

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev congratulated his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama and all U.S. residents on Independence Day on Sunday, saying any attempts to hamper Russian - U.S. cooperation are "groundless and dead-ended".

Medvedev also wished U.S. president's family health and welfare, to all U.S. residents - success and prosperity.

U.S. Independence Day is the main national holiday, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The document proclaimed independence of the United States from Great Britain.

"I am sure the constructive, good neighbor Russian - U.S. relations meet our people's genuine interests, their safety and global stability".

The president also said any attempts "to undermine the significance of our achievements and to hamper our consistent work in a spirit of partnership" were "groundless and dead-ended".

Earlier the reset of Russian-U.S. relations was threatened following the espionage scandal on the arrest on June 29 of 11 people allegedly spying for Russia. However, the both countries pledged the espionage row would not affect bilateral ties.

"At this moment it is important to expand bilateral agenda, to update it with new prospective areas of cooperation," Medvedev said, adding his recent U.S. tour followed that exact course.
