Opening discussion on the second day of the G8 summit in Canada focused on global security and in particular the nuclear programs of Iran and North Korea, a Canadian press secretary said on Saturday.

Dimitri Soudas said Canada wants the protocol of the summit to include demands for Tehran and Pyongyang to halt their nuclear programs and a condemnation on North Korea for its alleged role in the sinking of the South Korean Cheonan warship.

The UN Security Council has adopted several resolutions calling for Iran and North Korea to end their nuclear programs. Tehran maintains that its nuclear program is aimed at generating peaceful civilian energy, while North Korea has conducted two nuclear tests and declared that it is in possession of nuclear weapons.

The South Korean warship Cheonan sunk near the disputed Northern Limit Line in the Yellow Sea on March 26, causing the loss of 46 lives. South Korea says it has proof that North Korea fired a torpedo at the vessel from a submarine, although Pyongyang denies the attack.

The G8 leaders also plan to discuss other issues threatening global security, including the ongoing war in Afghanistan.
