One police officer was killed early on Saturday when his car blew up in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, a police spokesman said.

The spokesman said the blast occurred at 09:00 a.m. Moscow time [06:00 GMT], when the officer was entering his car near his house in the Ingush town of Malgobek.

The latest incident comes amid a wave of recent reports of attacks on police officers in Russia's North Caucasus republics of Kabardino-Balkaria and Dagestan.

Two police officers were killed by unidentified assailants in Nazran, Ingushetia's largest city, late on Friday.

The attack was followed by a shoot-out in Kabardino-Balkaria, in which one police officer was killed and another injured.

Still later, another police officer was killed by unknown gunmen in Dagestan.

Russia's North Caucasus region, which includes the volatile republics of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, sees frequent attacks by militants on police, federal troops and officials.
