A seven-year old girl miraculously survived an attack of a chapiteau circus leopard in Moscow Region's city of Klin.
The leopard attacked the daughter of a tamer during a show when the animal's performance was almost ended.
"The predator struck the girl's neck with its paw," a local police representative said. "The beast was taken away from the victim. The girl was urgently hospitalized."
"Currently, the girl is in intensive care," he continued. "According to information from the hospital, her life is out of danger, but condition is serious as she has a lacerated wound on the neck and a strong shock."
He added that the girl was participating in the show.
Russia's child ombudsman Pavel Astakhov urged to hold inspections in circuses and zoos in Russia and said that he will forward a letter with the initiative to the Russian General Prosecution office and the Russian sanitary watchdog Rospotrebnadzor.
He added that children participation in circus shows is a subject to all rules and regulations.
Russian state circus company argues whether the show's organizers had a right to let the child onto the circus arena as it requires a special permit.
This is not a first time when predators attack children. In May in a zoo in the Russian city of Tambov a lioness nearly killed a four-year girl, who approached the cell with the animal to take a photo too close.
