Uzbekistan has opened its border with Kyrgyzstan, allowing refugees to enter the country amid deadly ethnic violence which has hit southern Kyrgyzstan, an Uzbek Emergencies Ministry official said on Sunday.

The border was opened Sunday night, the official said. Refugees will be allowed to enter Uzbekistan "until there is a necessity" for it, he added.

The border between the two countries was closed following riots that swept through Kyrgyzstan's second-largest city of Osh and another southern city of Jalalabad on Friday and Saturday.
