More than 75,000 ethnic Uzbeks have fled to Uzbekistan from Kyrgyzstan, which has hit by violent ethnic clashes, as the Uzbek authorities have opened the border for refugees, an Uzbek Emergencies Ministry official said on Sunday.

"Most of them are women and elderly people. There are people with gunshot wounds among them," the official said.

Deadly ethnic riots swept through the country's second-largest city of Osh and another southern city of Jalalabad on Friday and Saturday. At least 97 people were killed in clashes between Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbek groups.
