Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued on Saturday a tsunami watch for India following a powerful earthquake in the Indian Ocean.
A 7.5-magnitude quake was registered at 19.26 GMT on Saturday 155 kilometers (95 miles) west of Nicobar Islands, India, at a depth of 35 kilometers (21.7 miles).
"A local tsunami watch is in effect for India," the center in Hawaii said in a statement posted on its website.
"A destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data," the statement said.
Other coastal countries in the region have been advised to issue their own tsunami alerts if deemed necessary.
There have been no reports on victims or damage so far.
A 9.3-magnitude Indian Ocean earthquake in 2004 produced a series of killing waves, which left over 200,000 people dead in 14 countries.
