Iran marks on Saturday the first anniversary of disputed presidential elections that brought Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a new term and led to the biggest protests since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Ahmadinejad's re-election triggered mass protests by defeated candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi's supporters.

At least 30 people were reported to have been killed and about 1,000 arrested in post-election violence in the capital Tehran and some other cities,

However opposition leaders Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi have cancelled plans for protests to mark the anniversary, citing safety fears after Tehran’s governor said any new demonstrations would “not be tolerated” and would be “dealt with.”

But some reports say that opposition supporters still plan to take to take to the streets and that security is extremely tight in Tehran.

Iran says the protestors are backed by the West.

The anniversary comes shortly after the UN Security Council imposed new sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, which Western powers believe is aimed at producing a nuclear weapon.

Iran maintains its nuclear program is peaceful and designed to provide civilian energy.
