High resolution images of Mars

NASA has published 600 high resolution photos of the surface of Mars.  The images are so detailed that items as small as a writing desks are easily distinguishable.

The images were taken by the HiRISE camera on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) between April 5 and May 6, 2010. A large number of craters can be seen in one of the pictures, which was taken in the middle latitudes of the planet.

The Ius Chasma in Valles Marineris is a giant system of canyons. Many scientists believe that Valles Marineris was formed by global cooling.

Gullies on the side of an unnamed crater in the Noachis Terra region can be seen in this image. Scientist believe the gullies were formed from the freezing of drained water.
