At least 39 people have been killed from a powerful blast that ripped through a wedding party in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province., the BBC has said, quoting local officials.

The incident took place in Kandahar province's Argandab district, the Press Association reported.

The news agency quoted provincial executive director Mohammad Annus as saying more than 70 people were wounded in the blast.

The cause of the explosion has not been established. No-one has claimed responsibility.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) currently has some 130,000 troops in Afghanistan, with most of them deployed in the country's volatile south and east. U.S. President Barack Obama has pledged to send an additional 30,000 soldiers to the war-ravaged country in the first part of 2010 to defeat the Taliban and establish law and order. Other NATO members have said they will send 7,000 additional troops to Afghanistan.
