The U.S. may lose up to 25% of its Russian poultry quota, which will be re-distributed among other countries supplying poultry to Russia, the industry and trade ministry said on Wednesday

The U.S. may lose up to 25% of its Russian poultry quota, which will be re-distributed among other countries supplying poultry to Russia, the industry and trade ministry said on Wednesday.

The U.S. 2010 poultry quota will be cut from 600,000 metric tons to 450,000 metric tons.

The ministry said in a statement that its subcommittee on quotas and tariffs "approved the proposal... to import 150,000 metric tons, or 25% of the U.S. quota, from any other state."

Russia and the United States have been in talks on resuming supplies to Russia after new harsher sanitary requirements came into force from January 1, effectively banning imports of U.S. poultry. The latest round of talks took place in Moscow in the beginning of March.

Russia's chief sanitary official Gennady Onishchenko said in late May that Russia and the United States were close to reaching a solution to resume poultry supplies.

Russia is currently considering Turkey and India as possible suppliers.
