Officials in Turkey and Georgia on Wednesday dismissed media reports that a plane crashed on the border between the two states late on Tuesday.

A powerful explosion was heard on Tuesday evening near a village in Turkey's Posof region that borders the Georgian region of Ardakhan. The acting governor of the Turkish region was quoted by media as saying that "the information... leads us to believe that an airplane has crashed.""

"Reports of a plane accident in Turkish airspace have not been confirmed," the Turkish transportation ministry said in a statement.

The information desk of Tbilisi International Airport said it had received no information on a possible air incident on the border with Turkey.

"We received no such information," a spokeswoman for the service said.
