Russian President Dmitry Medvedev thanked national ice hockey team players for their good game in the final of the 2010 World Championship in Germany, where Russia lost 1-2 to the Czech Republic, a presidential spokeswoman said.

Natalia Timakova said Medvedev just like most of the Russians watched the game cheering for the national team with his son Ilya.

She said that after the game Medvedev called Vyacheslav Bykov, the head coach of the Russian team, and asked him to say thank you to the players for the beautiful game.

He added that although the team failed to take the third consecutive title, there would be many more outstanding victories for the team as "sport is sport."

The Czechs has stopped Russia's winning streak of 27 straight victories and took the title for the first time in five years.

The bronze medals of the championship went to Sweden after they defeated hosts Germany 3-1.
