Russia's foreign minister said on Wednesday that he had noticed a less confrontational approach to Euro-Atlantic relations, with Moscow's policies gaining popularity.

"We see positive elements in the evolution of the international situation. On the whole, the demand for a confrontational approach to Euro-Atlantic policy has dropped, and even those who try to make political capital by creating new dividing lines in Europe have to consider this fact," Sergei Lavrov told the lower house of Russia's parliament.

He said that the principles advanced by Russia, such as pragmatism, a more multilateral approach to diplomacy, openness and non-confrontational promotion of national interests, were becoming more widespread.

Moreover, Lavrov told State Duma deputies, the initiative of President Dmitry Medvedev to conclude a European Security Treaty has received some 20 responses from various national leaders.

The Russian draft of the European Security Treaty was published on the president's official website on November 29, 2009, and forwarded to European and international colleagues.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton dismissed the proposal for a new treaty on European security, as concluding such a pact would involve a drawn-out process of negotiations.
