Fugitive Russian businessman Mikhail Gutseriyev, former head of Russneft oil firm, arrived in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia on Friday, the Ingush president's press secretary said.

"It is true that Mikhail Gutseriyev has arrived in Ingushetia," Kaloy Akhilgov said, adding that as yet he had no further information on the matter.

Gutseriyev resigned from his position in 2007, citing "unprecedented pressure" from the Russian government. He was for a time on a police wanted list after he failed to appear for questioning on tax charges.

Some time later, tax charges against the businessman were lifted and Gutseriyev was accused instead of illegal entrepreneurship. These charges were also lifted in April 2010.

On April 7 2010, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed amendments to a number of legislative acts enhancing the legal protection of people involved in entrepreneurial activity.

In October 2007, some Russian media carried reports that Gutseriyev had asked for political asylum in Britain. The reports were later denied by then British ambassador to Russia, Tony Brenton.

In April 2008, the Sunday Times included Gutseriyev in its list of the U.K.'s richest residents.
