President of Russia's North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria called on his citizens to consolidate after a terrorist attack on Saturday in the republic's capital.

An explosive device went off at a race track in Nalchik on Saturday afternoon wounding some 30 people. One of the blast victims, a 104-year-old World War II veteran, died later of sustained injuries.

"Today's situation requires responsible and consolidated measures from all of us, first of all from authorities and law enforcement bodies as well as from civil society institutions," Arsen Kanokov said in a statement.

"I call on the citizens of Kabardino-Balkaria to reply to this terrorism challenge by manifestation of active civil position, strengthening of unity and consolidation of our people," he added.

Police said earlier that, according to preliminary data, the explosive device was equipped with a time mechanism and the power of the blast equaled between three and five kilograms of TNT.
