The explosive device that killed a World War II veteran at the race track in Nalchik was detonated by a timer mechanism, law enforcement officials in the Russian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria said on Saturday.

The Kabardino-Balkaria emergencies ministry reported that the number of injured had risen to 29, 23 of whom remained hospitalized. The 104-year-old veteran died in Nalchik's main hospital while undergoing surgery.

"The bomb triggered at the racetrack in Nalchik was equipped with a clockwork mechanism," the republic's unified law enforcement information center said in a statement.

Earlier, a law enforcement source said the power of the explosive device was 5 kilograms of TNT.

Several members of the republic's government were attending the May Day horse races, but there has been no word on any injuries to officials.

Some reports said the blast occurred near the main entrance to the racetrack, while others said the explosive device was laid under the government platform in the main stand, or on the roof.
