Acting Polish president, parliamentary speaker Bronislaw Komorowski will attend Victory Day celebrations in Moscow in an effort to strengthen relations with Russia.

Russia will mark the 65th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany on May 9 with its biggest ever post-Soviet demonstration of military hardware. This year is the first time that troops from other countries will take part in the parade.

Komorowski was invited to the Moscow celebrations by the Russian presidential administration. Former Polish president, Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski, who took part in World War II, will also attend the event.

"We all feel that something has happened in Russian-Polish relations and this may be deepened or ruined," Komorowski said.

The top Polish official stressed that his visit to Russia on Victory Day was aimed at bolstering cooperation and peace between the two countries. He noted that Russian-Polish relations have significantly improved over the last few weeks.

Relations between Moscow and Warsaw, which have been hampered by historic past events, seem to have improved after the April 10 plane crash near Smolensk that killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski. Changes are mainly due to Russia's response to the tragedy.

Soon after the plane crash, Russia announced a day of mourning and hundreds of Muscovites came to the Polish embassy to express their condolences to the Polish people.

Russian authorities carried out a thorough investigation of the accident, which satisfied the Polish side. Officials also provided all the necessary conditions for the families of the plane crash victims who visited the Russian capital.

Some sources said that late Polish President Kaczynski confirmed his participation in the May 9 parade shortly before he died in the plane crash.
