All the bodies recovered from the wreckage of the Polish presidential plane, which crashed on April 10 near the western Russian city of Smolensk have been identified, an aide for the Russian health minister said.

The Soviet-made Tu-154 aircraft carrying a top-level delegation, including Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife, hit the top of trees as it attempted to land at an airport in thick fog.

"[Health Minister] Tatyana Golikova once again expressed her condolences to the Polish people and announced that the genetic expertise was completed today and all the bodies were identified," Sofia Malyavina said.

She said that the remaining 21 bodies would be transported to Poland shortly.

A spokesman for the ministry said that the number of people killed in the crash stands at 96 as it was initially reported - 88 passengers and eight crewmembers.

Although it was immediately stated that 96 people were killed in the accident, later reports from the Health Ministry said that 97 people were onboard the plane.

The Polish leader and other top government officials were en route to a ceremony in Katyn to pay tribute to some 20,000 Polish officers killed by Soviet secret police during World War Two.

The late president and first lady were laid to rest in Krakow on Sunday.
