Some 2,000 World War II veterans from the United States were awarded medals and given St. George ribbons for the forthcoming 65th anniversary of victory, the Russian consul-general in New York said on Friday.

“At the present moment more than 2,000 veterans have been awarded medals, and not only in New York. Consulate employees traveled to different states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The awarding ceremonies were held at veteran organizations or at veterans’ homes,” Andrei Yushmanov said.

Around another 1,000 veterans living in states in the northeast of the country will be awarded medals and St. George ribbons in the next few days, the consul-general said.

More than 55 million orange and black ribbons have been distributed across the globe since the campaign was first held in 2005. Ahead of Victory Day, people in many countries decorate their cars, clothes and everything else with the ribbons as an expression of their respect for those who died during the war.
