Uplistsikhe was cut out of rock 12km east of the town of Gori, on the left back of the Kura (Mtkvari) River. It dates back to the late second, early first millennium B.C. The town experienced several periods of boom and decline and was finally abandoned in the 19th century. This ancient town is a unique multi-layer architectural treasure and one of the most significant Georgian monuments.

Uplistsikhe is an ancient rock-hewn town and one of the first towns in Georgia. Uplistsikhe was cut out of rock 12km east of the town of Gori, on the left back of the Kura (Mtkvari) River.
