Russia has cautioned its nationals against visiting Bangkok in the next couple weeks due to continuing opposition protests in Thailand, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

A series of protests in Thailand started in March 2009 after the government offered 9 million low-paid Thai workers assistance worth $55 per head to stimulate the economy.

Protestors called the aid "bribery," and accused the government of coming to power illegally. They demanded that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva step down and parliament be disbanded.

Mass "Red Shirt" protests, which initially took place in Bangkok's historical center, spread on Saturday to its business and tourist areas.

The Russian Foreign Ministry recommends that those Russians who find themselves in the Thai capital avoid places where demonstrators gather, in particular areas where government buildings are located.

No information is available on how many Russian tourists are in Thailand or how many were planning to visit.
