Contractors expect the Bolshoi Theater’s face-lift to be completed by May 1. Currently, workers are restoring the steps of the grand entrance and adjusting the screed (guide) for placing granite tiles on Teatralnaya Square.
As for the interior, structural workers have begun the installation work. Parts of the first platform, supported by two 12 ton girder towers 22 meters long, are already on site.
Installing all seven platforms of the main stage will take about a month. When the stage is finished it will be something like a theatrical transformer –scenery will be easily changeable easily right during a play. The Bolshoi Theater will also accommodate several new dressing rooms. If the old building had very few dressing rooms, the new one will provide each artist with his own make-up table and shower.
With the daily countdown at 550 days, the restoration is expected to be ready for the first premiere in October, 2011.
