At least eight Israeli police officers and some 50 Palestinians were injured during clashes in East Jerusalem on Tuesday, a police spokesman said.

At least eight Israeli police officers and some 50 Palestinians were injured during clashes in East Jerusalem on Tuesday, a police spokesman said.

Clashes began after a youth group, Peace Now, began throwing stones at Israeli forces in response to Israel's announcement to build housing in the Arab region of the city.

"Eight police officers were slightly injured," Miki Rozenfeld told RIA Novosti, adding that 49 others had requested medical aid from the Red Cross.

The peak of the confrontation occurred in the morning, but the situation has now stabilized, the spokesman said.

Police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the protestors, he added.

Police placed 3, 000 personnel in the most problematic parts of the city after the incident. Troops will control the Palestinian territories in the West Bank until the evening.

Israeli-Palestinian ties were obstructed by the recent Israeli announcement that 1,600 housing units will be built in East Jerusalem. Despite the calls of U.S., Russian and European politicians to halt these settlement activities, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that Israel would not suspend building in east Jerusalem.
