Huge waves damaged a cruise ship off the French coast in the Mediterranean on Wednesday, killing at least two passengers, a Greek coast guard official told RIA Novosti.

The Louis Majesty, owned by Cypriot company Louis Cruises, was sailing from Barcelona to Genoa, Italy, with 1,350 passengers and 580 crew when 26-foot (8 meter) waves crashed into the vessel.

"Huge waves damaged the Cypriot-owned Louis Majesty cruise ship. Two passengers were killed and six others were injured. The victims are a German and an Italian," the source said.

The official added that the ship's seaworthiness was not affected by the accident and the Louis Majesty was returning to Barcelona for repairs.

The Louis Majesty (formerly the Norwegian Majesty) was built in 1992 and underwent refurbishment in 2004.

The 40,000-ton vessel was purchased by Louis Cruises from Star Cruises in July 2008 and began regular Mediterranean cruises in December last year.
