Visitors to a beach on the southern Chinese island of Hainan on Thursday were in for an unusual sight - a dog riding the waves on a surfboard.
A surf school on the island is using the dog to promote the sport to China's growing middle class, Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Surf instructor Dahai Zhang told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that if he can teach his pet dog Dan-dan to surf, anyone can learn.
"I thought, why don't Chinese people surf? Then I thought, I have to learn to surf and learn it well," said Zhang. The school opened two years ago and continues to attract interest from local people, as well as offering packages to Chinese and international tourists.
Zhang's business partner Brendan Sheridan predicted the sport was going to take off in a big way in China, as members of the growing middle class get used to having some fun in their spare time.
"It's inevitable there is going to be a huge surf explosion in China," Sheridan said.
