Russia's security chief Nikolai Patrushev will visit India on February 1-2 for regional and international security talks with his new Indian counterpart Shiv Shankar Menon, the Russian embassy in India said in a statement.

Patrushev, the Secretary of Russia's Security Council, and Menon, appointed as National Security Advisor to the Indian prime minister a week ago, are expected to focus on fighting terrorism and drug trafficking during the talks.

The officials are also to discuss cooperation of the two countries' security services, which is expected to "assure security in the two countries, as well as peace and stability in the region," the statement said.

"Regular meetings at this level have become in the past few years one of the most important components of high trust-based contacts between Russia and India," it said.

Before taking the security chief's office, Menon served as India's Foreign Secretary. Previously, he had been the country's ambassador to Israel, Sri Lanka, China and Pakistan.
