The sole power plant in the Gaza Strip had to cut down electricity supplies and might shut down completely as it is rapidly running out of fuel, a source in the local energy company told RIA Novosti.

Residents of the Palestinian enclave now receive electricity for only eight hours a day.

"The fuel that we have is enough to keep one turbine out of four running for several days," the source said.

According to local media reports, the fuel shortages were caused by the European Union's refusal to pay for fuel supplies. The reports, however, were not officially confirmed.

The plant accounts for approximately one third of Gaza's energy demand, the additional electricity is supplied via power lines from Israel and Egypt.
